Noisemaker is the award-winning writing partnership of writer/actor, Scott Gilmour, and composer/musical director, Claire McKenzie. Both graduates of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the pair work throughout the UK and internationally creating innovative, original work to challenge the expectations of musical theatre.
As individuals, Scott and Claire have worked with a wide variety of companies including The National Theatre of Scotland, The Royal Lyceum Edinburgh, Stellar Quines, Dundee Rep, The Citizens Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, Channel 4 Films, and The BBC.
We both trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; Scott as an actor on the BA Musical Theatre programme and Claire as a composer firstly on the BMus Composition followed by an MA in Musical Direction. We met in 2009 and quickly discovered that we liked the same things when it came to theatre. However, it wasn't until 2012 that we considered the possibility of writing together...
Unbeknownst to Claire, Scott submitted an idea to a new writing festival in Glasgow called On the Verge. The application was successful and, after convincing Claire that it wasn't a completely terrible idea to try writing a musical together, we began work on our first project FREAKSHOW.
Neither of us had planned, or expected, FREAKSHOW to have a life beyond its initial run in Glasgow. We had set out to have a lovely time and not much more than that, but after the show went to London, we were awarded the Daily Mail Drama Award 2012 which enabled us to take FREAKSHOW to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This felt like a turning point. If we wanted to produce, develop and create our own work, we'd need a strong foundation to build from; so we formed Noisemaker.
Now five years on, Noisemaker have worked across the globe, from Berlin to New York to Glasgow, encouraging collaboration between countries and artists to find new and compelling ways of telling stories and exploring how music and song may be used in theatre.
In 2015, we were selected for the New Voices Project; a global scheme run by NMI and Walt Disney Imagineering that recognises the most promising new writing talent in the field of musical theatre. This resulted in a concert of our work in Burbank, Hollywood and allowed us expert songwriting mentorship.
2016 marked our first project in the US, with our show FOREST BOY being chosen as a Next Link Award Winner by the New York Musical Festival (NYMF). We are the first UK writing team ever to be selected and, since NYMF, have continued to develop our work both in the UK and US with equal passion and ambition; collaborating with organisations like the American Musical Theatre Project at Northwestern University in Chicago, The National Theatre of Scotland (where we are currently Artists-in-Residence), Goodspeed Musicals in Connecticut, Mercury Musicals, The Sheffield Crucible Theatre and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Most recently, Noisemaker received a Scottish SME Business Award for our work and innovation as a writing partnership. The award was for Unique Scottish Business 2018 and marks the first time an arts organisation or partnership has been acknowledged by this sector.
"We're grateful to everyone we've had the pleasure of working with since we began Noisemaker. It's been a privilege making and sharing our stories with all of you."
