Open Stages

Dundee Rep Theatre is one of seven theatres working in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company on Open Stages, a nationwide project working with local amateur theatre groups across the UK. Dundee Rep Theatre is the only Scottish theatre taking part in this exciting project and it will see us working with seven Scottish amateur theatre groups. This weekend we were joined by 70 of those amateur community directors, performers and technicians to participate in a range of workshops delivered by RSC practitioners and Dundee Rep staff.

Open Stages demonstrates and develops the idea that Shakespeare is, and has always been, the people’s playwright by engaging with, supporting, development and celebrating the work of amateur theatre makers. Open Stages will focus on learning, with each amateur company receiving training, director mentoring, feedback and support from the RSC and partner theatres.

Until June 2015, Dundee Rep Theatre will work with Strathclyde Theatre Group, Crossmichael Drama Club, Blairgowrie Players, Kirkcaldy Amateur Dramatics, Linlithgow Players, Edinburgh Graduate Theatre Group and Mermaids: The University of St Andrews Performing Arts Fund

Over 2,500 people will take part in Shakespeare productions between April 2014 and April 2015 performing across the UK in a vast number of venues including 35 theatres, a campsite, 6 castles and even a graveyard. From open air performances to a stage being built in Govanhill Baths, Shakespeare will be watched and enjoyed in diverse venues across the UK when ordinary people will deliver extraordinary performances.
