Dundee Rep Ensemble

"Once again, the Dundee Rep Ensemble have truly pushed back the boundaries of Scottish theatre”.
The Scotsman

Dundee Rep Ensemble was formed by Hamish Glen in 1999.  Initially the company of 14 actors was intended as a three year experiment in finding new ways of working.  The experiment proved such a success that it led to major increases in funding for the company and to invitations to perform all over the world.

James Brining became Artistic Director in 2003 and during that time the company has created over 30 productions.  Since then, the Ensemble has also developed its international reputation, being the first UK company to tour to Iran in 30 years with Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale.  In 2005, it visited the prestigious Cerventino Festival in Mexico with a new version of Jarry’s Ubu the King and in 2006 it took David Greig’s Dr Korzcak’s Example to Tokyo and Hiroshima.  The company has developed co-productions with some of the UK’s leading producers including the Barbican, the Young Vic, National Theatre of Scotland, Paines Plough and the Tron Theatre, performing in all of Scotland’s major venues.  The repertoire is broad, encompassing Shakespeare, musicals, American classics, new plays and work for children and young people.

Notable productions during this period include:

Twelfth Night - Shakespeare
Scenes From an Execution - Howard Barker
A Lie of the Mind - Sam Sheperd
Sweet Bird of Youth - Tennessee Williams
Ubu the King – Alfred Jarry
A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Shakespeare
Peer Gynt  - Ibsen
Les Parents Terribles - Jean Cocteau
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - Edward Albee

Over the past year, Dundee Rep Ensemble have embarked on two National tours - firstly a 3 month UK tour of its award-winning musical, Sunshine on Leith which wowed even more audiences than last time!  They have also just completed a revival of the Dundee Rep Ensemble and National Theatre of Scotland's production of Peer Gynt which was supported by Barbican Bite.

In the last 5 years, the company has received nominations for over 30 Scottish Theatre Critics’s Awards receiving 12 Awards and in 2008 was the only company in the UK to win 2 TMA Awards.  2009 has already been a succesful year following the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland 2009 in which Dundee Rep Theatre won 2 awards.

Dundee Rep Ensemble is recognized as one of the UK’s leading theatre companies, with a reputation for creating high quality and ground breaking productions of an international standard.
