Dundee Rep Creative Writing Competition Winners

To celebrate the opening of our Rep Ensemble production, DEATHTRAP; Dundee Rep in association with the University of Dundee launched an exciting new creative writing competition inviting people to put pen to paper to compose an original work of fiction tackling the subject of writing about writing, in no more than 500 words.

The competition celebrates the opening of the first Rep Ensemble show of the year. This edge-of–your-seat murder mystery play, Deathtrap opened on Tuesday 20 Feb, and centres around a washed-up playwright Sidney Bruhl who is desperately trying to have another hit Broadway play. A break in his fortunes occurs when a student asks him to read DEATHTRAP - a potential Broadway hit. Chasing a desperate desire to once again be the toast of Broadway, Sidney is prepared to do whatever it takes. Deathtrap, it turns out, really is a play to die for.

The Deathtrap creative writing competition was launched on social media and online, inviting anyone over the age of 14 to enter by submitting their own piece of work. An outstanding amount of entries were received and standard this year was incredibly high. All the entries were then sifted through and selected by Director of the University’s Writing Practice and Study programme, Kirsty Gunn.

3 winners and 2 runners-up have been selected. The overall winner Eric Yeaman will receive exclusive access throughout the rehearsal process of Dundee Rep Ensemble’s, Passing Places, plus a creative writing mentoring session with Writer and Director of the University's Writing Practice and Study programme, Kirsty Gunn and tickets to all Dundee Rep Ensemble productions during 2018! Rachel Fox was awarded 2nd place and Craig Spinner received 3rd place. Our winning selection also included two Runners-up, Karen Clifford and Craig Mudie.
